Blue Cross and Blue Shield have been providing health insurance and benefits to Americans for over 75 years. Blue Cross and Blue Shield are now the largest health insurance providers in America with a wide selection of affordable health plans available. Blue Cross started in Dallas in 1929 serving school teachers, while Blue Shield started soon thereafter serving mining and lumber camps in the Northwest. The associations merged in the 80's forming Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) as we know today. There are separate associations in most states with a large concentration of government employees.
